What does it mean to be human in a global world? At The Museum of Ethnography, located in the beautiful museum park between Djurgården canal and Gärdet, visitors discover new worlds and lifestyles.
The Museum of Ethnography opened in 1900, but its collections date all the way back tp the natural history cabinets of the 17th century. The museum also features objects that were collected during 18th century expeditions, as well as the results of the 19th century's round-the-world sailing trips and Sven Hedin's expeditions in the early 20th century.
In addition, countless missionaries, diplomats and private individuals who have donated objects to the collections. You can see much of this in the museum's permanent exhibitions, particularly in the open storage (Magasinet: An Ethnographic Treasury) that features over 6,000 objects on display.
The museum aims to maintain a green profile, and was the first in Stockholm to be heated using solar panels. In addition to that, our restaurant Matmekka serves locally grown, organic Swedish foods fused with other food traditions from around the world to offer you a beautiful culinary experience.
This is also the site of our Japanese tea house - the one and only in the Nordic region. It's a popular attraction at any time of year.
